Dear Spiritual Baptist of Trinidad and Tobago,

Today, we gather to reflect on the remarkable legacy of Archbishop Elton Griffith of Grenada, a champion of religious freedom and a beacon of hope for our community. His tireless efforts to repeal the Prohibition Act paved the way for us to worship without fear of persecution.
Archbishop Griffith’s unwavering dedication to our faith and his unshakeable belief in the power of prayer inspired a generation of Spiritual Baptists. His leadership and vision helped to break down barriers and bring our community closer together.
As we look back on his work, we are reminded of the struggles our ancestors faced in exercising their right to worship. The Prohibition Act, enacted in 1917, aimed to suppress our religious practices, labelling them as “abominable practices.” But Archbishop Griffith refused to let oppression silence his voice.
With unwavering conviction, he rallied the community, mobilizing them to stand up for their rights. Through peaceful protests, petitions, and advocacy, he challenged the status quo, ultimately leading to the repeal of the Prohibition Act in 1951.
This victory was not just a triumph for Spiritual Baptists but a testament to the power of faith, perseverance, and unity. Archbishop Griffith’s legacy serves as a reminder that our freedom to worship was hard-won and must be cherished and protected.

As we honour his memory, let us continue to build on his foundation, ensuring that our faith remains a beacon of hope and light for generations to come. May his courage inspire us to stand up for our beliefs, and may his unwavering dedication to prayer and worship guide us on our spiritual journeys.
We give thanks for the life and legacy of Archbishop Elton Griffith, a true champion of religious freedom and a shining example of Spiritual Baptist values. May his work continue to inspire us as we move forward in faith, unity, and strength.
Amen.
