THE LAW OF KIND WORDS

One of the most prominent and important ways You show kindness is through Your speech. Words carry power. They can harm or heal, help or hurt; indeed, “the tongue can bring death or life” (Proverbs 18:21). If you want to live a godly life, taming Your tongue is one of your top priorities. As Jesus noted, BY Your words You will be acquitted, and by Your words, You will be condemned” (Matthew 12:37). The kindness of your speech may be the difference for others too-particularly unbelievers–in whether or not they see Christ in you.

Some people are naturally kind. For perhaps up to half of the people you encounter, being courteous, respectful, and gentle in their speech and manner is wired into them to some degree. But for the other half of the population, kindness requires discipline. This is where the “law of kindness” comes in. The best way to acquaint yourself with its precepts is to look at God’s Word.

David hit on a key concept: “May these words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, Lord” (Psalm 19:14 NIV). When you internalize God’s Word, kindness will govern your tongue.
